Lizzo and SZA’s ‘Special’ Hits No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay Chart

2 min read

Lizzo has a new hit on Billboard. Her “Special” collaboration with SZA moves to No. 1 on the Adult R&B Airplay this week.

“Special” marks Lizzo’s first No. 1 single on this airplay list, while it scores SZA her second chart-topper.

SZA previously rose to the top of the summit in 2018 with her Travis Scott-assisted single “Love Galore,” which appeared on her debut album, Ctrl, released in 2017.

Lizzo released her “Special” remix with SZA following her performance at the 65th Grammy Awards, where she performed the original track, lifted from her Grammy-nominated album of the same name.

Last week, “Special” reached No. 1 at R&B radio, again, scoring Lizzo her first chart leader on this airplay format and SZA’s second.

Lizzo and SZA are set to headline Made In America. The two-day festival is set for Sept. 2 and Sept. 3, at Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Miguel, Tems, Coco Jones and more are set to perform as well.

On Sept. 20, SZA will launch the second North American leg of her SOS Tour in Miami, Florida. She will perform in Nashville, Baltimore, Toronto, Brooklyn, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The tour will conclude Oct. 29 in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Grammy-winning singer will be supporting her sophomore album, SOS, which spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The album includes SZA’s latest hit “Snooze,” which peaked at No. 1 on urban radio last week.

In a December 2022 interview with Rated R&B, singer/songwriter Leon Thomas exclusively shared the story behind his involvement with the track, which features writing and production credit from Babyface.

“Me and my production partner Khris [Riddick-Tynes] were super nervous. SZA popped through, and she was so nice. I had met her before, but this was a great reintroduction to her new world of music,” Thomas told Rated R&B.

“I’m glad that I was able to collaborate with such strong creators. We also worked with this kid name BLK out of Scotland. He sent some parts in. The whole thing came together really fast. She wrote [“Snooze”] in an hour. We weren’t sure if she was going to use it, so it’s a super blessing.”

“Snooze” SZA’s fourth chart-topper at urban radio, following “Kill Bill,” “Shirt” and “I Hate U,” which all appear on SOS.
